The History of the World Jigsaw Puzzle Championship

The first-ever World Jigsaw Puzzle Championship was held in Valladolid, Spain, on September 28th to 29th, 2019. This historic event was organized by the World Jigsaw Puzzle Federation (WJPF) and featured puzzlers from all over the globe.

The competition was originally conceived as a way to bring together the best puzzlers in the world and to promote the joy of puzzle solving. The first championship was a huge success and has since become an annual event.

Due to the pandemic, the 2020 World Jigsaw Puzzle Championship was canceled. After two years, the event was held again at Valladolid, Spain. Forty-two countries participated in the event, and Spain took the most medals.

How The Competition Works

The competition is open to puzzlers of all ages and abilities. There are three main events: the team event, the individual event, and the pairs event.

Team Event

When it comes to jigsaw puzzle competitions, there are two main classification rounds and a final round. In the first classification round, teams of four members are divided into two groups and given the challenge of creating two jigsaw puzzles in three hours. The objective is to complete two 1000-piece puzzles as quickly as possible, using only their skill and creativity. The two best-performing teams by country then advance to the final round, where they must complete a puzzle consisting of 1000 pieces and another puzzle with 1500 pieces. The team that finishes both puzzles the fastest is crowned the champion and takes home the grand prize.

Pairs Event

In the classification round of the jigsaw puzzle competition, two groups of competitors face off to see who can complete their 500-piece puzzle the fastest. Each competitor must complete their puzzles within a tight time limit of 90 minutes in order to move on to the finals. The two fastest pairs from each country are selected based on their time, with all remaining competitors ranked according to finishing time.

In the final round of the competition, 100 pairs compete head-to-head in a fierce battle to see who can finish their 1000-piece puzzle first with only 2 hours to complete the challenging task, every second counts as teams race against the clock to place their pieces correctly and win the top prize. The ultimate goal of this competition is for each team to work together as quickly and efficiently as possible in order to come out on top.

Individual Event

In a classification round, participants from all over the world compete in teams to complete jigsaw puzzles as quickly as possible. There are three groups, and each group is given a puzzle with 500 pieces. The participants must race against the clock to finish their puzzles within 90 minutes. The two fastest participants from each group then advance to the final round, where they compete against one another for the title of jigsaw puzzle champion.

The finals involve an intense showdown between 180 competitors who must put all their skill and dexterity into finishing their puzzles as quickly as possible. During this final stage, each participant must demonstrate speed, precision, focus, and mental stamina.
